Women in Geospatial Series

Stephanie Khoo is a
Senior Geospatial Specialist at SLA.

In our first-ever Women in Geospatial Series, we spoke to Stephanie Khoo
from the Singapore Land Authority and Mariya Prempeh from
Leica Geosystems Pte Ltd on their geospatial careers.

"I think that the geospatial field is generally very welcoming. You do not need to specifically study geospatial in school to be able to enter the field. You just need to be willing to put in the time and effort to learn," said Stephanie who has been in the geospatial sector for six years.

"That being said, I think the main challenge for me is that geospatial is a very broad field that is constantly evolving. The use cases also cover many different domains. Therefore, one of the challenges is having to constantly learn, from keeping up with the latest technologies to learning about the different domains we apply geospatial to.
The geospatial field certainly keeps you on your toes.
This means there is never a dull moment!"

Mariya Prempeh is the
General Manager of Leica Geosystems Pte Ltd.

When asked to give advice to women who wish to undertake leadership positions in the geospatial sector, Mariya said: "Go for it! It is a fascinating and dynamic sector to be in. It's hard to imagine our lives without the influence of geospatial technologies. It enables anything from delivery services, navigation maps and helps with urban and territorial development to disaster recovery and the management of natural resources. Looking at my team, I can say that this sector does not discriminate by gender or other factors. Anyone with a passion can be successful in it."

"Just look at how geospatial technology leapt for our daily commutes. I still remember vividly the hassle of route planning using paper maps. When I moved to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, for the first time, about 15 years ago, I ended up driving with a map spread out on my steering wheel until I got to know the city well enough. When was the last time you saw someone using a paper map? Fast-forward 15 years from now, when my kids will be ready to drive, I am sure autonomous vehicles will become a commodity, all thanks to the advancement of geospatial technologies."
